Can we please get an official position from Microsoft on the validity of using Windows 7 & 8.x keys to activate new Windows 10 installs? There is conflicting information on whether this is permissible, despite Microsoft activation servers happily activating new 5 StarZIP-2001 1.0 crack serial keygen 10 installs with Windows 7 or 8.x keys:

Yes, You Can Still Clean Install Windows 10 with a Windows 7/8.x Key
"Readers routinely ask me whether it’s still possible to clean install Windows 10 with an unused Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 product key. Over two years after Microsoft first enabled this functionality, the answer is a resounding yes."

You Can Still Get Windows 10 for Free With a Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 Key
"Now, even though the free upgrade offer is technically over, this method still works in the Anniversary Update, either when installing Windows 10 with Anniversary Update media or by entering the key after installing Windows 10. Enter any Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 key that hasn’t previously been used to upgrade to 10, and Microsoft’s servers will give your PC’s hardware a new digital license that will allow you to continue using Windows 10 indefinitely on that PC.
"Microsoft hasn’t released any sort of statement about this upgrade method at all. It’s possible that Microsoft will disable it soon, but it’s also possible Microsoft will look the other way and keep this trick around to encourage more Windows 10 upgrades for a long time to come."

Sure.  The Windows 10 upgrade has not been free for over 3 years now.

If you installed the upgrade back when it was free, you're set.  If you have a downgraded install from a 10 license, you're set.

If you purchased 7 / 8 and never upgraded to 10, you now have to purchase a license.

As long as sites keep publishing this as 'news' and as 'a way to get around' the correct licensing method, people will keep believing there may be a way to license without paying.

I don't understand why some claim that MS isn't putting out official word, About Us - Windows Activator, though.  MS said when the free upgrade would end when they first introduced it and they never changed that date.  Maybe people think MS should repeat this information over and over again, every time someone realizes there is a way around proper licensing?

Yup MS official answer it is not free and in their EULA it also states that just because an install is activated does not mean it is properly licensed. Really the only way to upgrade to 10 is if you bought a 10 license and downgraded to 7 or 8 or buy an upgrade license, or a new license.

Further I was recently looking for some information on this to provide to someone at my job when they asked why a 5 year old PC I had to reinstall the OS on was not upgraded to 10 and I explained it wasn't really About Us - Windows Activator, and I did find a post from someone that went through a SAM audit and got dinged for upgrades done after the end date of the promotion and ended up buying upgrade licenses to get compliant.

I'm actually embarrassed by how many people think something that ended many years ago can still be used now, it's not like it hasn't been covered on here many times already and recently as well.

If something is conflicting, the right answer is usually the one people dislike being told - it's not free, you need to buy a license now.

I guess many people still (ab)use this method though, (il)legally.

That still is not very clear. As CloudHelper posted in /r/msp:

> That document is very confusing to say the least. However, if you want to be technical about it, it states that upgrading using GWX is no longer free as of that date. The way people are upgrading now is not GWX. I agree with how you're reading it though - enough so that I spent over an hour with Microsoft support reviewing that page, and multiple people assuring me that it is legit and legal to upgrade now, as the licenses have been digitally About Us - Windows Activator already - which is why they activate. And the system will itself say its a valid digital license.

Which is why it would be great to have a clear statement from Microsoft or even just have them stop accepting Windows 7 and 8 licenses for activating fresh Windows 10 installs anymore.

They won't stop activating because MS has pretty much always worked on the honor system with licensing.  They are assuming you have a valid license and when you ask to activate About Us - Windows Activator go ahead and do it.  They've told everyone (repeatedly) that the free offer is over.  Yes, they said 'gwx' but that was the way to get the free offer.  When it was free, that was it.  These other methods aren't talked about because they were never the way the free upgrade was allowed, back when it was introduced.

It doesn't explicitly say it is not allowed to be legally upgraded, however, When has MS ever said you can upgrade Major OS to Major OS free? Except with specific programs like the GWX and assistive technology programs?

Please note if you install Windows 10 and don't activate it you will see little different from an activated install except some nagging about not being activated. I read somewhere that MS did this because the impairment of the OS for not being activated in older OSes led to bigger virus and malware threats due to the hoops some would go to crack the activations or bypass it.

This would likely cause issues for people who accepted the upgrade but now want to do clean installs, About Us - Windows Activator, I know their license is digital and activated online, About Us - Windows Activator, but most people will still put a key in during install.

Activation is not the issue here though, nor is it the topic of discussion, the discussion is, is this legal and the answer is no, unless you own a license to back it up.

I can do 80mph down a residential street, but I am not supposed to.

Activating a key is the same, About Us - Windows Activator, sure you can do it and sure it will work, but just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

To illustrate the confusion online around this issue and why a definitive answer/sticky would be handy, here is a February 2018 post on answers.microsoft.com:

Can I activate windows 10 with Windows 7 or 8 key?

Q: Can you tell me if my windows copies are valid to activate windows 10? [screenshot of Windows 8 DVD and order summary]
If they were, is it safe to download windows 10, create a USB installation medium, make a clean installation and finally activate with one of those key?

A (from a Microsoft MVP): If you have Windows 10 Pro installed and you have either a Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8 Pro license, yes, you can use it to activate Windows 10 Pro.

Notice that there is nothing in there about licensing the copy of 10?  The question was about activation.  Yes, you can activate.  No doubt about that.

But you still need to have a license if you want to be legit.

Key points from that post though.

They are a volunteer not an employee - people get things wrong, but they answered the specific question which was can I activate - and the answer is yes.

The question was not is this legal. The answer may have been different (and should have been) but even then, About Us - Windows Activator, people are misguided and also misunderstand themselves.

This is a great example of why I dont simply post answers on here and sometimes ask for a reason  - it's not to tell the OP not to do something, but to better understand why and possibly help them and their company avoid a lawsuit.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

This really needs to be officially addressed by Microsoft.

I just called their support line at 1-800-642-7676 and asked the same question about activating and licensing a new Windows 10 install using a Windows 7 key, despite the GWX program having ended. I was told by a tech support rep in no uncertain terms that it was fine. I asked if I could send them a link to this page and was told they cannot accept incoming email.

Highlighting the confusion, a sales rep I spoke with said a new copy of Windows 10 would have to be purchased.

Whatever the policy is, I just hope Microsoft can at least get their employees on the About Us - Windows Activator page.

Tech support is there to help people make things work.  They are not licensing experts nor do they, for the most part, care about licensing.  You asked them if it would work and they said yes, because it will.

Sales, of course, About Us - Windows Activator to make money.

I'm not sure why you About Us - Windows Activator accept the fact that MS has answered this, but they have.  It's right on the page I linked.  The free upgrade ended 3 years ago.

Hi DragonsRule,

Given that Microsoft employees are getting it wrong and Windows luminaries like Paul Thurrott are penning titles like "Yes, You Can Still Clean Install Windows 10 with a Windows 7/8.x Key", it seems like a bit clearer guidance from Microsoft might not be out of order.

I don't know why you are fixated on the fact you 'can do it' and not 'does this make me licensed'

YES, you can install Windows 10 with About Us - Windows Activator 7, 8.x or 10 key and this has been confirmed to you multiple times on here alone, this WILL work and is VALID for reasons already mentioned above, what you keep asking is and keep missing from your own question is, is this legal/does it make it legitimately licensed and the answer is no, unless you have a valid 10 license or accepted and upgraded to the free offer back when.

It has nothing to do with the key or the fact it will activate.

Lots of good information on this topic as well as some Windows 10 Upgrade FAQ's towards the bottom.

Text

What does end of support mean? When Windows 7 reaches end of support on January 14, 2020, your computer will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following: Technical support for any issues Software updates Security updates or fixes While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended.

Windows Activation

Occasionally the Windows software on NMU issued machines may state that it is not activated or genuine (especially if you haven't connected to an on-campus network recently). You may see prompts stating "The activation period has expired," "You may be a victim of software counterfeiting," About Us - Windows Activator "Windows is not genuine." Follow these intstructions to verify and/or troubleshoot Windows activation.

Activate Windows
Verify Windows Activation

Activate Windows

1. You will need to be connected to an NMU network (Wifi, About Us - Windows Activator, Ethernet, or LTE) to activate. If you are off campus, you can also connect using the VPN client, as detailed on our Starting Windows VPN Client page.

2. Once connected to an NMU network, you must first ensure that your date and time are correctly synchronized. It is possible for AM/PM to be incorrect, the date to be wrong, or even for the clock to be off by minutes or seconds.  Ensure your time is correct and change it if it isn't by following the instructions at our "Windows Date and Time Zone Settings" page.

3. Click the File Explorer icon  on your taskbar.

4. Right-click "This PC" (or Computer in Windows 7) in the left navigation pane then select "Properties."

5. Scroll down to the "Windows Activation" section and select "Activate Windows Now," then "Activate Windows Online Now."  This is when it's most important to be connected to an NMU network via LTE, WiFi, or VPN.

If you have connected to an NMU network and have syncronized your time properly but Windows still won't activate, please call or visit the HelpDesk

Verify Windows Activation

1. Click the File Explorer icon  on your taskbar.

2. Right-click "This PC"(or Computer in Windows 7) in the left navigation pane then select "Properties."

3. Look under the "Windows Activation" section to see if Windows is activated. If not or it fails to activate, continue on to the troubleshooting steps below.

Windows and Office Activation Key Management System

The following information applies to licenses purchased from and/or distributed by UNM's IT Software Distribution department. If you are uncertain of the origin of your license, please contact your systems administrator. Newer versions of the Windows Operating System and the Office Suite, use a new CyberLink PowerDirector 18.0.2030.0 Crack of volume activation. They do not use traditional product keys. In order to activate the newer versions of Windows and Office, a Key Management Service (KMS) will need to be used.

Activation will work for x86 (32-bit, About Us - Windows Activator, x64 (64-bit) and ia64. In order to connect to the KMS server, you will need to confirm with your department systems administrator that the perimeter firewall is open to port 1688 UDP/TCP.

To process the activation request to About Us - Windows Activator KMS server, About Us - Windows Activator, download the activation file from the IT Download page, save it to the desktop, then right-click and run with as the administrator.

Your computer will need to be connected to one of the UNM wired subnets. This includes main campus and branch campuses. After the initial activation, the computer will contact the KMS server About Us - Windows Activator every seven (7) days to validate your license. The validation process is performed automatically. If your computer is not on any of the UNM wired subnets for more than 180 days, the computer will go into reduced functionality mode.

If software is not activated using the process above, About Us - Windows Activator, check the following:

  • Your computer is connected to a UNM wired subnet (Main or Branch campus).
  • If you are using a laptop, you are connected to a UNM wired subnet and wireless is turned off.
  • Your local client firewall is not blocking connections to port 1688.
  • Your antivirus is not blocking connections to port 1688.
  • Your departmental perimeter firewall is open to port 1688.
  • Please contact your systems administrator if you are uncertain.
  • The windows time service is in sync on your local computer. Check that the time listed in the bottom right corner of your computer's monitor reflects the actual time, within 5 minutes.
  • You are using an authentic version of Windows, distributed by IT Software Distribution.
  • The processes above were run with elevated privileges. Right-click, “Run as Administrator.”

If your computer is joined to either colleges.ad.unm.edu or hsc.unm.edu, activation will process automatically.
